Google: Test of Trending Topics Filter for Search Queries

The Trending Topics filters allow searchers to filter their search results on Google Search – such as by sports, weather, or education.

Google has long offered its users various filter options for search queries. Users can search for videos, news, or images, for example. But they can also display results only for a specific period or language. It is possible that just one more option will be added. Then searchers can select categories matching the search query in the Trending Topics section. The corresponding feature is currently being tested for mobile and desktop.

At the Search Engine Roundtable, SEO expert Barry Schwartz reported on the test. It was noted by Saad Alikhan für Mobile and Shalom Goodman für Desktop. They shared corresponding screenshots on the social media platform Twitter, which clearly show how searchers can view the Trending Topics to fine-tune the search query.

However, the screenshots also show that only certain searchers can fine-tune their Google search for individual search queries.

The screenshots show examples of the search terms “New York” and “Kentucky.” They can be divided into sports, politics, education, crime, or weather. For some searches, Google will show three categories, and for others, up to five. They are lined up under the Trending Topics section heading.

It is unknown whether the feature will be rolled out after the test. However, it is only a small change in the SERPs. However, this feature lets searchers find articles that interest them more quickly. For example, if searchers enter “Bremen” and select the category Sport, only articles from this area will be displayed. Conversely, search results from other areas, such as politics, can be left out.
