Web editor

Web editors, also called HTML editors, are software applications for programming websites. Here, certain HTML codes are entered that determine the visual image of the website.

A previously determined design can be implemented or programmed by a web editor. Here, the functions and graphical representations created by the web editor can be supplemented and extended by various scripting languages (eg. Javascript) or stylesheet languages (eg. CSS). However, not all web editors are compatible with these languages.

Different types of web editors

There are different types of web editors. On the one hand, there is the classic HTML editor, where the source code is entered manually as text. For this, the programmer needs knowledge about the meaning and effect of the different codes.

On the other hand, there are the so-called WYSIWYG editors (“What You See Is What You Get”), where the result is immediately visible in parallel to the coding in real time, as in a web browser. Here, you can work directly in the design of the website as in a text program, for example (set fonts, font size, alignment, etc.). This means that knowledge of HTML is not necessarily required, as the HTML code for the document is generated automatically. Nevertheless, there is the option to work directly in the source code.

For different operating systems (Windows, Mac, Linux) certain web editor applications have established themselves.

Modern web editors make it easier for web design beginners, because here directly the contents of the website can be compiled by drag & drop as in the building block principle. These web editors also have versatile design options and allow the website creator to put together a website in no time.
