SEO: Click depth more relevant than URL structures

Click depth defines the number of required clicks from the home page of a website to the individual page. Google Webmaster Trends Analyst, John Mueller, shares tips and answers for SEOs at the Google Webmaster Central Hangouts.

The question of an online shop operator was whether it would not be better to make products available as quickly as possible with just a few clicks or instead to use a section separated by a slash as a category in the URL. Mueller replied that both approaches are theoretically possible, but it is still important that the site can be reached with a few clicks from the home page. A positive ranking rating from Google would therefore be more likely for the first solution.

Mueller went on to explain that he didn’t see much benefit in dividing the URLs into separate categories. Google doesn’t count forward slashes. Ultimately, however, the decision is left to the SEO. It’s more about how easy it is for site visitors to find specific content. The importance of a website can be negatively affected by a complicated URL structure, so caution is advised here.

On the other hand, the direct forwarding from the home page to the stores is an indication that the stores are more relevant and are therefore given higher weighting by Google in the search results.

Therefore, it is more important how many links to the content are needed, rather than focusing on the look of the URL.
