The problem with the Google traffic

Tim Soulo, Ahrefs’ head of marketing and product strategy, conducted a study based on a billion websites to investigate why some of them aren’t being filtered by Google’s organic traffic. He presents the results on his own blog.

According to this, nine out of ten websites do not get any visitors via the search engine. More than half of the websites examined are completely empty-handed. 4.5% of websites receive less than 10 visits per month. Only 0.3% of the websites have more than 1000 visits per month.

Still, it’s important to remember that the basis of one billion websites is only a small part of the true total, Soulo said. In addition, the Ahrefs tool pre-selected the websites and only listed those that were shared via social media.
Unusual keyword combinations were also not taken into account in this study.

Nevertheless, the question remains why 90% of pages are ignored by Google. Soulo names two possibilities in answer to this question:

For one thing, a lack of link building could be the fault. More than half of the websites examined (55.24%) were unable to register any backlinks. Only 3.4 percent had more than 10 backlinks.
Links play a huge role in terms of ranking factor. Pages that have not built a link are relatively rarely rewarded by Google.

Another possible reason for the lack of visits could be poor keyword research. Often, some keywords are simply not searched for, which means that there is no traffic flow or Google penalizes the keywords, e.g. due to aggressive link building.

In order to achieve a good ranking on Google, a sensible combination of links should be taken into account. Keyword research should be conducted to use keywords that are commonly used by visitors. This still poses a bigger challenge for some website builders.
